Advertiser spend on Reddit was up in 2017 for the first time in nearly a decade, with a total of $1.2 billion in ad spend on the site, up 9.5 percent year-on-year, according to a new study from ad-tech company AdWords.
Advertisment spending for Reddit’s top 100 advertisers increased an impressive 4.1 percent to $2.1 billion in 2017.
The study estimates that advertisers spend $2 billion on Reddit each day, which is nearly $3 billion per month.
The largest percentage growth came from advertisers who had previously paid on Reddit.
That is an increase of nearly 20 percent from 2016, when $2,300 was spent on Reddit, according the report.
Adwords CEO Josh Rifkin says this growth is good news for advertisers who may not have previously spent on the platform.
“Reddit has been the perfect platform for advertisers to reach their target audience,” Rifkins told CNNMoney.
“If you’re an advertiser who hasn’t spent on reddit in the past, it’s a great opportunity to do so.”
This year, Reddit users are expected to spend $3.3 billion on advertising across social media, up from $3,200 in 2016, according AdWords data.
The report also shows Reddit’s share of ad spend in the US is rising as well, up 6.4 percent in 2017 to 31.6 percent.
Advertisements for Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Instagram and Twitter accounted for nearly 60 percent of the $2 million spent on advertising on Reddit this year.
The next biggest revenue streams for Reddit advertisers were video, which accounted for $1 million of that total, and digital products, which generated $700,000.
