New Zealand’s PM says he wants to have ‘no-one at the table’ in Brexit talks

New Zealanders are calling for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to resign over her position in the Brexit negotiations and her refusal to support the Government’s position on the deal.
New Zealanders will hold a national consultation on Wednesday over the government’s Brexit plans and Ms Arderr has been accused of “wanting to have no-one in the room” when it comes to the negotiations.
The consultation is expected to include calls for Ms Arden to resign and calls for a “no-deal” Brexit.
It comes as Mr Ardernn has defended her position on Brexit, saying she wants to “bring it down to earth” and “make it easy to move on”.
“There are a lot of hard work to do to get this process through and we are not yet there,” she said.
“I will continue to talk to people, and I will continue trying to get the best deal for New Zealand.”
In the past, New Zealand has refused to take part in the talks.
Ms Arderrn was elected as New Zealand leader in 2019 but her leadership was not renewed following the death of Prime Minister John Key in December 2018.
She has been in the spotlight after the resignation of her deputy prime minister in March 2017 over allegations she made inappropriate comments about men in a hotel room.
In May, Ms Ardsen said the Government should be allowed to negotiate with the European Union as a way to get a deal done and avoid the need to have a referendum on the Brexit deal.
The consultation will also be looking at the Government policy on the future of the Pacific island of New Zealand.
Under the New Zealand Act, the Government must seek unanimous consent of New Zelanders before any deal can be concluded.
Opposition parties have accused Ms Ardarn of attempting to rewrite the Act, saying it “sends the message that this is a matter of domestic politics”.
The Government’s policy paper says it would be “premature” to make any final decisions about New Zealand leaving the EU until after the Brexit talks have been completed.
