Food safety experts are urging people to take extra care when eating out.
The top ten foods people should avoid are: meats, seafood, dairy, eggs, dairy products, nuts, fruits and vegetables.1.
Meat, Seafood, and PoultryFood is the most common cause of foodborne illness and death in the United States.
In 2017, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that one in three people in the US ate meat, poultry, or eggs, with eggs accounting for more than one-third of that.
That figure is up from a quarter in 2015.2.
EggsFoodborne illness is an increasing concern, particularly in developing countries.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), between 2011 and 2017, a total of 4,527 deaths related to foodborne illnesses occurred worldwide.3.
Fish, Shellfish, and LambFish are considered safe when eaten in moderation.
Fish is one of the most widely consumed meats and has been linked to several health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer.4.

Yogurts are also known for their natural sweetness, which is thought to be one of its main health benefits.6.
EggsThe eggs industry has made headlines for its low environmental impact and high profit margins.
The United Nations World Food Programme reports that over 70 percent of the eggs consumed in the world are made with waste products, mostly eggs and dairy.7.
Fruit and VegetablesThe fruits and vegetable industry has been a boon to our health and well-being, as it provides us with vital nutrients and protein.
In 2016, the FDA estimated that more than 8 billion servings of fruits and veggies were consumed worldwide, and a whopping 20 percent of these were consumed by children.8.
DairyA 2016 study by the UCL Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences estimated that a third of the world’s dairy is produced in just two countries: the United Kingdom and Germany.9.
EggsThere are many factors that contribute to an increased risk of food-borne illness.
A 2014 study by researchers at the University of Oxford found that eating foods that have higher amounts of salt and sugar may increase the risk of developing food-related illnesses.10.
